INTERNATIONAL  ARCHITECTURAL  FORUM

           “Saint Petersburg - Window into the Future”

 

      Organizing Committee of the International Architectural Forum represented by the Saint Petersburg Administration, the Committee on City Building and Architecture, the Committee on Monuments Protection, the Saint Petersburg Architects Union, the State Hermitage Museum, the State Museum Reserve “Tzarskoye Selo” and “СENTAUR” Co Ltd. in close cooperation with Russian Academy of Architecture and Building Science (SPb department), International Charity Fund of Saving of Petersburg - Leningrad and Fund of Reconstruction and Development “Region-Invest” invites you to take part in   the    INTERNATIONAL     ARCHITECTURAL     FORUM,    which   is   personally   supported   by   the 

City Governor Vladimir Yakovlev.

         PLACE: Saint Petersburg, Russia                                              TIME: May 11 - May 17, 2002 

      AIM OF THE FORUM:

·         To present the city in all the brilliance of its past and present architecture on the threshold of the 300th anniversary.

·         To show it moving forward into the future with new plans and creative potential joining the ideas of masters of different times and nations having worked here.

·         To show Saint Petersburg as the proper place for a professional meeting of architects from different countries.

·         To exchange the ideas and experience on how to preserve our cultural legacy for future generations.

 

      STRUCTURE OF THE FORUM:

·         Seminars on the architectural history of the city.

·         Excursions on specific topics and professional interests of the forum participants.

·         Seminars and meetings with restorers, work in sections on the topic “Rebirth and Preservation of Saint Petersburg”.

·         Problems of modern megalopolis and ways of solving them. Meetings with representatives of the City Hall and Administration committees. 

·         Section  “Russian Art and History – Reflections in Architecture”. Visiting of museums and architectural sites, discussions with the leading specialists. 

PROGRAM OF THE FORUM (6 days, the first and the last are optional, working sessions occupy 4 days):

1st day  May 12

Splendid city, glorious city...”

A special city tour with additional information,

given to the places, mentioned in reports of the

Forum (Palace Square, St. Isaac’s Cathedral,

“Small Holland”, Mariinskiy Theatre,

Mikhailovskiy Castle, Theater Square etc).

Ballet performance in Mariinskiy Theatre

(former Kirov Theatre).

4th day  May 15

“Architectural heritage - traditions and innovations.”

Reports concerning preservation and restoration of Petersburg. Discussions on problems of modern megalopolis.

Key speakers:   Yury Kurbatov;   Robert Tavernor;

Jonathan Harris; John McAslan.

The investment program of the World Bank on renovation of the historical center of St. Petersburg.

Work in interest groups: Group of teachers from universities;

Group of restorers; Group of architects and city constructors;

2nd day  May 13

“And on the raging waves all styles and flags will visit us...”

Grand opening. Greetings of the City Governor.

Announcement of the forum program and topics.

Meeting of the Chief Architect of St. Petersburg with chief architects of different cities.

5th day  May 16

“Tzarskoye Selo as a pearl of Saint Petersburg school of restoration”

Excursion to Tzarskoye Selo (Alexandrovskiy Palace,

Ekaterininskiy Palace, Park, Chinese Village).

The mysterious past of the Amber Room, its re-creation today.

Summing up Forum. Chamber music concert.

Official closing of the Forum. Grand banquet in the palace.

3rd day  May 14

“Culture as city forming factor”

Presentations on the plans of reconstruction of

Mikhailovskiy Castle, Mariinskiy Theater.

6th day  May 17

Optional:  morning excursion to

Petrodvorets  (for those who wish);

Departure of the participants.

100% refund will be given for all cancellations received up to 30 working days before the event. Cancellation must be made in writing form.

Day 1: City tour; Evening – ballet in Mariinskiy theatre.

·         English masters in Saint Petersburg.

·         Century of German architecture.

·         The Dutch in Saint Petersburg.

Day 3:  Morning - Plenary sessions;

Excursion to the Hermitage and to the Golden Treasury.

Day 4:  Morning – plenary sessions;

Afternoon: - Excursion to the Russian museum - outstanding monument of Classicism. Centre of Russian art at all stages of its development. Russian Museum as compositional dominant of Art Square of the city.

Second part of the day: Work in interest groups.

Day 5: Day in Tzarskoye Selo (excursions, sessions).

Official closing of the Forum.
